DEWALQUE, Gilles J.G.

(1826 – 1905)

(Born: Stavelot, Belgium, 2 December 1826; Died: Liège, Belgium, November 1905) Belgian physician, mineralogist & geologist.

From 1850, Dewalque was a professor of physics and chemistry at the University of Liège. In 1855, he was appointed as the conservator of the mineral cabinet. In 1857 he became professor extraordinary and in 1865 professor ordinary in mineralogy and geology at Liège University. He authored over 400 publications on different facets of Belgian geology. In 1870 Dewalque was elected the president of the Belgium Academy of Science.
