BAUMHAUER, Heinrich Adolf.

(1848 – 1926)

(Born: Bonn, Germany, 26 October 1848; Died: Fribourg, Switzerland, 1 August 1926) German crystallographer, mineralogist & chemist.

From 1866 to 1870, Baumhauer was educated at the University of Bonn. Later he attended the University of Göttingen. Appointed professor of mineralogy at the University of Fribourg in 1895, he was also for a short period professor of inorganic chemistry. His main contribution to mineralogy was the introduction of the concept of polytypism into the literature. Baumhauer was elected a member Mineralogical Society of St. Petersburg, Russia. On his suggestion, an index to all chemical publications, the Chemishes Zentralblatt edited by German Chemical Society, was founded. He wrote numerous papers on mineralogy and the symmetry of crystals.

Scarce. "The Realm of Crystals for every Friend of Nature, especially Mineral Collectors" is a popular style treatise that discusses the unusual beauty of natural mineral crystals. There are chapters on the nature of crystals, their forms, properties, etch figures, twinning, etc., followed by sections discussing the various crystal classes The crystal classes are explained through the usual crystal drawings as well as fine drawings made from actual specimens. An appendix describes the use of Miller's symbols to label various crystal faces.

Very scarce. This is an advanced textbook describing in the first 46 pages an introduction to Baumhauer's crystallographic method. The remainder of the book reinforces the theoretical aspects by guiding the reader through nine examples applied to crystal forms of real mineral species such as apatite, dolomite, boracite, cassiterite, etc. The atlas consists of 12 plates individually mounted on cardboard within an accompanying case with tie-down strings.

Very scarce. In the New Developments in Crystallography the latest discoveries and methods invented in the science are presented. It was designed to bring workers up to date on the latest trends regarding terminology and symbols, but was not intended to develop a complete training in crystallography. Written less than a decade before X-ray analysis was invented, Baumhauer had a rich selection of practical and theoretical material to draw upon for his text. New facts and theories are discussed regarding symmetry and conditions of crystal formation, methods of instruction, relations between chemistry and crystal form, and twin crystals. An appendix explains the symbol designations applied to crystalline forms by Paul von Groth in his Physikalische Krystallographie.
