STOKES, Whitley.

(1763 – 1845)

(Born: 1763; Died: Harcourt Street, Dublin, Ireland, 13 April 1845) Irish physician.

Stokes was Regius Professor of Physics at the University of Dublin. He was a medical Fellow of Trinity College, Dublin, whose career was temporarily interrupted from 1798 to 1800 when he was suspended for his association with the United Irishmen.

A Catalogue of the Minerals in the Museum of Trinity College, Dublin. Part I. Containing the Systematic Collection. Dublin, Graisberry and Cambell, 1807.

8°: xix, 128 p. No more parts published. Co-authored with the Reverend Walter Stephens, this catalog describes 1,089 minerals that are arranged under the classes of Earths, Salts, Inflammables, and Metals. A new catalog was prepared in 1818 by Stokes and Taylor [see next entry]. Rare.

Rare. In 1818, Whitley Stokes, in conjunction with Thomas Taylor, a distinguished botanist, published another catalog listing the minerals contained in the systematic collection of the museum at Trinity College in Dublin. It lists 1,204 specimens.
