SMITH, John Lawrence.

(1818 – 1883)

(Born: Charleston, South Carolina, U.S.A., 17 December 1818; Died: Louisville, Kentucky, U.S.A., 12 October 1883) American geologist, mineralogist & chemist.

Through marriage, Smith became independently wealthy and was therefore free to persue whatever scientific research he choose.
