The fine set of plates shows specimens of fossils in hand colored renderings with detailed locality information. In the "Avant-propos" Razoumowsky criticizes the observations made by the French mineralogist Louis-Constant Prévost in his Sur la constitution géologique du bassin de Vienne ... (Vienna, 1820). This work had been the basis for determining the chronological relationship of tertiary deposits in various parts of Europe. Razoumowsky challenges the Frenchman's theories of mountain structure and adds observations of fossil types found around Vienna but unknown to Prévost.
