POEY Y ALOY, Felipe.

(1799 – 1891)

(Born: Havana, Cuba, 26 May 1799; Died: Havana, Cuba, 28 January 1891) Cuban mineralogist & naturalist.

Poey y Aloy studied law in Havana, but early on became interested in the natural history of his native Cuba. In particular he studied the fishes found around the island, discovering several new species.

Very rare. This is the first textbook dealing with mineralogy in Cuba. It is a book that worked as an elemental course in the science, prepared for students of the school system of Cuba. Popular on the island, it appeared in two more editions.
