HINTZE, Carl Adolf Ferdinand.
(1851 – 1916)
Hintze attended the schools of Breslau before entering the city's university. In 1872 he became assistant to the crystallographer P. Groth, then at the University of Strasbourg. In the fall of 1880, Hintze took a position as scientific consultant to the mineral dealing establishment of F.L.R. Krantz in Bonn. In 1884, he also accepted a position as instructor of mineralogy and crystallography at the University of Bonn. In 1886, he accepted a similar post at his alma mater, the University of Breslau. There in 1892, after the death of F. Roemer, Hintze was appointed professor ordinary and director of the Mineralogische Instituts. He remained in that position the remainder of his life.

Very scarce. One of the great, monumental classics of mineralogical literature. In the first American notice of this work, Edward S. Dana prophetically wrote, "The publication of the first part of a new Descriptive Mineralogy which promises to be, when completed, the most exhaustive work ever written, is an event of no small importance to those interested in the science" [See: American Journal of Science, 38 (1889), 251].
No other mineralogical work has ever achieved the encyclopedic nature of Hintze's masterpiece. Individual descriptions of minerals give first the crystallographic characters, axial ratios, lists of forms, calculated angles. The physical characters and optical properties are then elaborated upon with full references to the original papers. The mineral is then given an exhaustive historical review with careful attention to its name, composition and earlier researchers. A general statement on the species occurrence follows, with a very detailed discussion of all important localites, an account of the crystals forms from each and references to the authors who have treated them. The figures of crystals are scattered through this part of the text as referred to. An account of the artifical mineral and an exhaustive list of previous analyses, including alteration products, closes the species descriptions. Seemingly, nothing is left to conjecture as there appears to be little attempt at condensing the descriptions, and this adds to the authority of the work, with many individual mineral descriptions running several pages.
The Handbuch der Mineralogie was published as a sequence of parts. The first section of volume two was the first to appear in 1889 with the volume finally being completed in 1897; this part describing the silicates and titanites was completely the work of Hintze. Thereafter, the sections for volume one began to make their appearance. After Hintze's death in 1916, Gottlob Linck took over the editing of volume one, parts 3 and 4, which was eventually completed in 1933. Described below are several Ergänzungsband which were published in an effort to keep this massive work current.
Gottlob Eduard Linck. (Born: Oetisheim, Württemburg, Germany, 20 February 1858; Died: Jena, Germany?, 1947) German crystallographer. From 1879 to 1883, Linck studied in Stuttgart, Strasbourg, and Tübingen. In 1883, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Strasbourg. In Strasbourg, he became assistant for mineralogy (1885-94), professor extraordinary (1894) and from 1894, professor ordinary in mineralogy and geology at the University of Jena.

Very scarce. To insure that Hintze's Handbuch der Mineralogie would remain current, Gottlob Linck periodically published supplemental volumes describing all the new minerals and correcting mistakes of the former volumes. These descriptions were not nearly as comprehensive as Hintze's originals, although they did follow the same format. In this supplement nearly 800 species are arranged alphabetically.

Very scarce. After the death of Gottlob Linck and a span of 16 years, the publisher's enlisted K.F. Chudoba [see note below] to write another supplement to Hintze's Handbuch der Mineralogie. The format has been significantly changed.
Karl Franz Johann Chudoba. (Born: Writzow, Czechoslovakia, 10 September 1898; Died: Bonn, Germany, 14 March 1976) Czech mineralogist & crystallographer. Chudoba was an assistant in the Museum of Natural History at the University of Vienna, before becoming a professor of mineralogy at the University of Freiberg-am-Breisgau (1926-8). Subsequently, he was appointed professor of mineralogy at the University of Bonn (1928-68). Chudoba applied himself principally to the study of German minerals, but also wrote a papers on the minerals of Madagascar, Brazil and Southwest Africa.
