HAUY, René Just.

(1743 – 1822)

(Born: St.-Just-en-Chaussée, Oise, France, 28 February 1743; Died: Paris, France, 1 June 1822) French mineralogist & crystallographer.

Born to a poor family, Haüy received a good classical and theological education by means of a scholarship to the Collège de Navarre in Paris. In 1770, after he was ordained a priest, Haüy was assigned a teaching post at the Collège Cardinal Lemoine. There he became interested in botany, but after attending Daubenton's lectures on mineralogy he turned his attention to mineralogy. Haüy was elected an associate member of the Paris Academy of Science in February 1783. In 1793, after the publication of his Essai d'une Théorie sur la Structure des Cristaux (Paris, 1794), Haüy left teaching to devote his full attention to mineralogical studies. During the French revolution, he placed himself in jeopardy by refusing to swear the oath required by the Civil Constitution of the Clergy. He was arrested, but through the efforts of his former student, E. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, Haüy was released the night before the others prisoners were executed. In 1793 he was appointed to the Commission of Weights and Measures. Also, in 1793, he attempted unsuccessfully to gain the release of A. Lavoisier. In 1795, he was appointed an instructor of physics and mineralogy at the École des Mines (School of Mines). After the death of D. Dolomieu, he succeeded to the post of professor of mineralogy at the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle (Museum of Natural History), where he greatly enlarged the mineral collection. In 1809, Haüy also assumed the newly created chair of mineralogy at the Sorbonne. He retained these posts until his death.

Haüy's own 12,000 specimen mineral collection was sold in 1823 to the Duke of Buckingham. In 1848, it was returned to France when the Jardine des Plantes purchased it from the Duke's heirs. Today, over 6,000 specimens labeled in Haüy's handwriting have been identified.

Very scarce. Haüy's first printed book, this work was insturmental in establishing a solid foundation on which modern theories of crystal structure rest. In it, Haüy brought together the advances in crystallography made by Romé de l'Isle, Bergman and others into a coherent structural theory, based on the structural unit, the "molecule constituante" (later renamed by him to "molecule integrante"). Haüy's model depicted crystals as built up out of these molecular units which were polyhedral in form. Haüy also theorized a common "nucleus" or "primitive form" for all crystals of the same "species." This primative form was often revealed by cleavage of a crystal symmetrically along its angles and edges. Haüy's theory of crystal structure changed little in its essentials during the remainder of his career, which went on for almost forty years after the publication of the Essai.

After the introduction, the text is divided into ten articles, the first two of which describe the structure of crystals based upon primary and secondary forms. The next seven articles apply the theory to various minerals, while the final chapter gives observations and conjectures on the formation of crystals.

Very rare. Prior to the publication of his great work, Traité de Minéralogie (Paris, 1801) and perhaps at the urging of the French revolutionary council, Haüy published an extract of the first volume in the Journal des Mines [see 29, ?????]. It apparently generated enough interest that this very scarce book containing a reprint of that article and the accompanying 3 plates was prepared from it. In the advertisement, Coquebert informs the public that Citizen Haüy is totally engaged in completing the manuscript of his great work that will contain many new observations about cyrstallography and mineralogy as outlined in this Extrait.

Plates: Comprise 86 engravings showing mostly crystal drawings and diagrams and numbered I to LXXXVI. They are signed Cloquet Sculp. These are the same as issued with the octavo edition.

Extremely rare. This is a different earlier issue of the complete text of the Traité de Minéralogie in a quarto sized volume. The text has been reset to utilize the larger paper size, and based on the Errata, this appears to be an earlier issue of the Traité, which perhaps for economic reasons of paper and binding material was reduced in size to the more common octavo issue. The Freilich Sale Catalog calls this a large paper issue, which it is not. The text is completely reset, rather than being printed on a larger paper size stock. So far only four copies of this issue has been located.

Scarce. This work is arguably the most influential work written in the historical development of mineralogy and crystallography. It far superseded any previous attempt to create a mineralogical classification. It is a work of comprehensive insight, and much of it, written in literary fluency, repays the casual curiosity of mineralogists and historians of science. Haüy's magnum opus containing his theory of crystal structure and his system of mineral classification. Haüy's law of decrement states led his successors directly to the law of rational indices, one of the fundamental laws of modern crystallography. This work was immediately recognized as the most important offered by France to the science of mineralogy, one that placed the country at the forefront of the European nations in this science. In it the author makes crystallography the basis of his determination of mineral species, relegating the data derived from chemical analysis to second rank. The mathematical precision with which the crystallographic facts could be presented provided an absolutely exact basis for mineralogy which it had lacked before that time, as the correctness of the crystallographic determinations could always be proved by rigid geometrical tests.

In his mineral classification, Haüy believed that chemistry played a secondary rôle to crystallography in determining species groups. The work also contains Haüy's discovery of piezo-electricity.

The work opens with a Preliminary Discourse that assumes the character of a literary dissertation, generally philosophic, frequently eloquent, and always dignified and learned. Haüy first draws comparisons between the study of minerals and the obvious charms of zoology and botany, with their living subjects to study. He then explains the mysteries of the science. The polyhedral shape of crystals for example can bring mathematical precision to the science. Haüy notes the easy separation of natural substances into stones, salts, bitumens, and metals, the quick recognition of crystals, the artificial and purely empirical classification of minerals, by their external characters, combined with a few simple reactions, as the effervescing of carbonates, the later systems of Cronstedt, Bergman, Born, Kirwan, etc., when analysis usurped the place of mere inspection. He emphasizes the importance of distinguishing varieties, as in calcite, a conviction he incorporated into his description of the minerals. He also illustrates the value of analysis in alluding to the mineral smithsonite that was first regarded as a zeolite, later as heavy spar, and then shown conclusively by chemical analysis to be a salt of zinc.

Rare. A considerably revised, corrected and enlarged version of the first edition. It provides a general treatise on mineralogy taking up half of the first volume, with the remainder being the beginning of a systematic descriptive mineralogy which extends through volume four. The last volume also contains an index to the entire work and a list of subscribers. The atlas plates show some mineralogical apparatus and many hundreds of crystal drawings.

Scarce. In 1809, Haüy issued his Tableau Comparatif, which had the stated objective that it would give those who had followed his course of lectures a complete tabulation of his mineralogical methods, updated to include the discoveries and observations the science had gained since the publication of his Traité de Minéralogie (Tableau, p. i).

Yet the Tableau Comparatif was more than a mere compendium of recent mineralogical statistics. Since the publication in 1801 of the Traité, Haüy's theories had come increasingly under attack. Specifically, his fundemental concept that every definite crystalline form or "molecule integrant" is characteristic of only one substance of definite chemical composition, and conversely that every substance of definite chemical composition can occur in only one definite crystalline form, drew Haüy into the Proust/Berthollet controversy about fixed versus variable proportions in chemical compositions.

Haüy's insistence upon the "molecule integrant" being the unique, fixed criteria for determining every mineral species lead him to implicitly accept the chemical law of fixed proportions long before Proust had declared it (Hooykaas, 1952). This position was in direct opposition to Berthollet, who believed that chemical composition was not fixed as Proust and Haüy claimed, but rather was of a variable nature. Therefore, in his 1803 Essai De Statique Chimique, Berthollet assailed Haüy's ideas about fixed mineral species in an elaborate note (Essai, 1, 433-449; Hooykaas, 1952). In answer to Berthollet's criticisms Haüy wrote the Tableau Comparatif which defended his position on the "molecule integrant" and its importance in uniquely defining a mineral species.

The book is divided essentially into two parts. The first is a "Methodical distribution of mineral species principally determined with the aid of crystallography," while the second is titled, "Notes relating to the results of the analyses and other points on the philosophy of mineralogy."

Very scarce. A landmark book in the science of gemology, described by Sinkankas (1994) as "the first determinative gemology worthy of the name." This book marks a transition from earlier descriptive lapadaries to works based on scientific studies. The volume describes the crystallography and physical properties of various gemstones, and characterizes how these qualities might be used in identifying a stone, whether rough or cut. To facilitate this an identification table is provided. The three plates show various crystal forms, a Nicholson's hydrometer (used for measuring specific gravity) and other laboratory apparatus for testing electrical properties.

Very scarce. Haüy's last work containing the culmination of his studies in crystallography. It greatly enlarges the number of species described, but the theory first published in his Essai d'une Théorie (Paris, 1784) remains essentially the same. Haüy also recognizes hemitropical crystals (so named by him, but first observed by Romé de l'Isle).
