HAUSMANN, Johann Friedrich Ludwig.

(1782 – 1859)

(Born: Hannover, Germany, 22 February 1782; Died: Göttingen, Germany, 26 December 1859) German mineralogist.

Hausmann received his formal education at the University of Göttingen, from which he graduated with a Ph.D. in 1806. Afterward he made an extended one year geological tour of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. An appointment as General Inspector of Mines for Westphalia came in 1809, and in 1811, Hausmann accepted a position as professor of technology and mining at the Göttingen. Later he became professor of geology and mineralogy. In 1811, Hausmann was elected a member of the Königl. Societät der Wissenschaften in Göttingen, a body for which he served as secretary from 1840 to 1859. The mineral "Hausmannite" was named after him by W. Haidinger in 1831.

Very scarce. The first attempt at applying spherical trigonometry to crystallographic description. In the preliminaries, Hausmann writes of being influenced by René Just Haüy's Traité de Mineralogie (1st ed., Paris, 1801). After some thought, he decided to apply the techniques of spherical trigonometry to the problem of crystal description, and the results of this research is reproduced in this work.

The text is divided into six sections. The first (pp. 2-20) give a short account of Haüy's theory of the structure of crystals. Each of the remaining five sections describe the crystallization of a single mineral. Described species are boracite (from Lüneburg, Germany), feldspar, barite, sphalerite and magnetite (from Ilefeld, Germany). For each mineral, information from Haüy's work is provided, and then Hausmann presents the application of his mathematical treatment to the crystallographic problem.

Very scarce. Considered very valuable as an introduction to mineralogy, Hausmann has carefully compiled and digested everthing known about mineralogical science, occasionally interweaving the text with his own personal views. After a short introduction to mineralogy, a long section giving definitions of terminology and another covering systematics is presented. A general index completes the work.

Very scarce. A thorough compendium classifying every known mineral species. Following the introduction is an overview of the classificaiton system. The system Hausmann follows in this enterprise, was originally presented in his Entwurf eines Systems der unorganisirten Naturkörper (Cassel, 1809) [see above entry]. Only slight modifications have been made to the system from the earlier work. After this overview the more detailed descriptive mineralogy arranged according to the outline is presented. It is divided into the classes of combustibles, incombustibles, earths, oxides, acids and salts. Throughout the volumes Hausmann has applied careful and judicial judgement in expressing his own views and the mention of new discoveries and theories. Volume three concludes with two indexes. Each lists the described mineral spieces, one referencing names in German, while the other lists names in French.

Plates: There are two folding plates at the end of part one and one plate at the end of part two, volume one. Each of them shows various crystal drawings. None are signed.

Very scarce. Part one of this work, comprising the first volume, is a comprehensive, well thought out introduction to mineralogical science. In the forward, Hausmann writes that this new edition of his Handbuch is made necessary by the many changes in the science of mineralogy, particularly with regard to chemistry and crystallography. All parts of the science had undergone transformation and there had been new discoveries. After presenting a generalization of these events, Hausmann explains that these changes are digested into this introduction. In this first part, the basic concepts of the science are covered. Included is material on terminology, theoretical principles, nomenclature, and systematic classification. The second portion of the work was published in two volumes and consists of the descriptive mineralogy. As in the previous edition, all know mineral species are described in the classification devised by Hausmann.

The first volume was also issued under the title: Versuch einer Einleitung in die Mineralogie (Göttingen, 1828) [see entry below].
