(Born: Gothenburg, Sweden, 5 March 1748; Died: London, England, 19 October 1810) English botanist & bibliographer.

Dryander, a pupil of Linnaeus, arrived in London on 10 July 1777. Botanist and librarian to Joseph Banks from 1782, librarian of the Royal Society and Vice-President of the Linnean Society. Editor (and part writer) of Aitonös Hortus Kewensis (1st edn and part of 2nd edn), and author of a paper on Australian plants in Ann. Bot. (König & Sims) 2: 504­532, 1806. His herbarium is housed at BM.

Very scarce, published in an edition of 250 examples. This is a comprehensive, classified catalog of Joseph Banks' extraordinary library of natural history works. Each of the first four volumes is devoted to a specific discipline: (1) general writings, including works on museums, (2) zoology, (3) botany, and (4) mineralogy. While the last volume contains supplemental titles to the four volumes and a comprehensive author index to the set. A particularly interesting fact about this fine library is that it was acquired by the British Museum en bloc, and the individual titles can still be examined there.

Joseph Banks. (Born: 1743; Died: 1820) English naturalist. Banks was educated at Harrow, Eaton, and Christ Church, Oxford; studied natural history, and accompanied Cook in his expedition round the world in the Endeavour, 1768-71, - upon his return, created hon. D.C.L. of Oxford; built a large collection of natural history objects including minerals, which are now preserved at the British Museum; visited Iceland, 1772; made baronet, 1781; F.R.S., 1766; president of the Royal Society, 1778-1820; first to observe that almost all Australian mammals were marsupials and more primitive than placental mammals of other continents; great patron of science, where his house in Soho Square became a frequent meeting place; plant genus "Banksia" named in his honor.
