Rare. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, there was a debate concerning the origins of meteorites. Many believed they were developed in the earth's upper atmosphere through some unknown process, while a minority supposed they originated outside the earth's atmosphere. In this monograph, Diruf supports the theory of formation in the earth's atmosphere, referring to meteorites as "Luftsteine" (=air-stones).
