D'ACHIARDI, Antonio.

(1839 – 1902)

(Born: Pisa, Italy, 28 November 1839; Died: Pisa, Italy, 10 December 1902) Italian mineralogist.

Father of the Italian mineralogist Giovanni [1872-1944], d'Achiardi began his studies at Pisa in 1859, receiving his degree for doctor of science from Pisa in 1859. He subsequently became assistant for chemistry in 1861, and in 1870, for mineralogy. He was appointed professor extraordinary of mineralogy in 1874 and professor ordinary in 1876.

Very scarce. This splendid and unsurpassed topographical mineralogy describes the rich geological region of Tuscany in Italy. Each species known to occur within the area is provided a full description, including known occurrences, mineralogical associations, and occasional notes on the history of that species in Tuscany. The text principally treats these descriptions, while the three indexes at the end reference the localities where species are found, the principal mines and caves of the region, and a list of all mineral species mentioned.

Related work: Histoire des Progrès de la Géologie de 1834 à 1845. Paris, Société géologique de France, 1847-1860. 8 vols.

Rare. This work describing the progress of geology from 1834 to 1845 can today still be consulted with profit for the geological historian. Originally it was to consist of four volumes, but D'Archiardi finally gave up writing at volume eight. The work is divided into the following volumes. 1. Cosmogeny and géogénie, physique of the earth. 2. Le part.Terrain quaternary or torrential. 2. 2nd share. Tertiary ground. 3. Nummulitic formation. Rocks igneous or pyrogenic of the quaternary and tertiary times. 4. and 5. Cretaceous formation. 6. and 7. Jurassic formation. 8. Triassic formation. Illustrated by 4 plates. These volumes are a remarkable collection of learning that is still highly appreciated by geologists.
