BRONN, Heinrich Georg.

(1800 – 1862)

(Born: Ziegelhausen near Heidelberg, Germany, 3 March 1800; Died: Heidelberg, Germany, 5 July 1862) German geologist & paleontologist.

Bronn studied at the University at Heidelberg where he took his doctor's degree in the faculty of medicine in 1821. The following year he was appointed professor of natural history. He now devoted himself to palaeontological studies, and to field-work in various parts of Germany, Italy and France. His principal work, Letkaea Geognostica (2 vols., Stuttgart, 1834-8; 3rd ed. with F. Romer, 3 vols., 1851-6), has been regarded as one of the foundations of German stratigraphical geology. In 1861 Bronn was awarded the Wollaston medal by the Geological Society of London.

Rare. This is basically a description of the geology in the area around Heidelberg in Germany. It contains only minor mineralogical content, being mostly devoted to petrological and geological analysis. A petrological map illustrates the text.
