BOLTEN, Joachim Friedrich.

(1718 – 1796)

(Born: Horst, Holstein, Germany, 11 September 1718; Died: Hamburg, Germany, 6 January 1796) German physician.

Bolten studied medicine at Halle, where in 1740 he was awarded his M.D. Thereafter, he opened a medical practice in Hamburg, which became very successful. He authored several medical works.

Rare. The Latin forward is written by Anton August Heinrich Lichtensten [see note below]. Afterward is a forward in German by the famous collector Peter Friedrich Röding clearly stating this publication was a solicitation to locate a purchaser for the collection. Apparently, no one was forthcoming [see next entry].

Bolten's library was cataloged for sale in 1796: Bibliotheca Bolteniana sive catalogus librorum ... ex omni genere scientiarum praecipue autem historia naturali, anatomia, chirurgia & arte medica ... Joachim Friedrich Bolten. (Hamburgi, Trapp, 1796).

Anton August Heinrich Lichtenstein. (Born: Helmstädt, Germany, 25 August 1753; Died: Helmstädt, Germany, 16 February 1816) German theologian & naturalist. Lichtenstein studied oriental culture, theology, philosophy, physics and natural history in Göttingen, Leipzig and Helmstadt. In 1775, he was appointed rector of the Stadtschule in Helmstädt. A few years later he became rector at the Johanneum in Hamburg. In 1794, he also took on the role of city librarian. In 1799, Lichtenstein was appointed ordinary professor of theology at the city's University. He retired in 1810.
