BEUDANT, François Sulpice.

(1787 – 1850)

(Born: Paris, France, 5 September 1787; Died: Paris, France, 10 December 1850) French geologist & mineralogist.

Beudant was educated at the École Polytechnic in Paris. He was named professor of mathematics at the Lycée d'Avignon in 1811, before being appointed professor of physics at the Lycée de Marselilles in 1813. Beudant learned his mineralogy in 1814 when he was sent by Louis XVIII to England to collect the recently purchased mineral collection of Bournon. When a government sponsored expedition was made to the Balkans in 1818, Beudant was in the group as mineralogist and geologist. In 1820, he was appointed Inspector-General of the University. Beudant was elected a member of the French Academy of Science in 1824.

Scarce. This summary of the mineralogy and geology of Hungary, is based on observations made by Beudant while conducting an extensive French state sanctioned exploration through the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is the earliest and most detailed geological survey of the Balkans, including not only what is now Hungary, but also parts of Yugoslavia, Austria, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Russia. Within the atlas are a very detailed geological map of Chemnitz and its surroundings (now in Hungary) and also other areas such as Transylvania being the southern part of this important mining region on the Balkan. These are among the earliest geological maps of any part of the European Continent. Maclure is critical of the work, saying: "This whole work is a specimen of book making. All that can possibly be useful, in mineralogy or geology, might, with much ease, have been put into 50 pages, and the reader saved the labor of turning over from 1500 to 1800 pages of repetitions and descriptions of the same rocks, a thousand times over, creating confusion and fatigue, without leaving in the mind any defined ideas on the subject" (AJS, 7 1824). Sinkankas draws attention to Beudant's description of opal mines in the Dubnik area and his discussion of the opal.

Scarce. A highly regarded textbook, considered at the time of its publication to be the best authority in French mineralogy, and used in centers of higher learning throughout France. At its appearance it was the best treatment of Berzelius chemical classification of minerals. In the first portion, Beudant provides a comprehensive introduction to mineralogical science, including definitions, crystallography, physical and chemical properties, nomenclature, and an overview of his system of classification. The bulk of the volume is a descriptive mineralogy arranged according to this classification. Tables at the end provide an analysis of the specific wieghts of simple bodies and acids and a description of a new form of goniomenter.

Earlier mineralogical investigations, particularly experiments with carbonates and other salts, showed Beudant a relationship between chemistry and crystal form that he expressed as Beudant's law. In essence, he discovered that when two compounds were dissolved within the same solution and precipitated together, the properties of the resulting crystal were determined by both substances. For example, the interfacial angle would have a value intermediate between the angles of the original compounds and proportional to the amount of the compound within the crystal. Within the Traité Beudant expands upon the relationship between chemistry and crystal form by developing a system of classification based on a mineral's chemical makeup.

The system Beudant adopts was a device of his own research in which he follows Berzelius and utilizes the electronegative component of the mineral to arrange it within the system. He begins by writing how unscientific the current state of mineralogy is, and his wish to remove everything arbitrary in classifying minerals. After surveying the various properties of minerals, he defines mineralogy as the "la réunion des minéraux de mème composition." To present the idea to the reader, he ranks the known elements into three groups: Gazolyten (make volatile compounds), Leucolyten (produce uncolored oxide compounds) and Chrocolyten (combine into colored compounds). Under each of these groups are now creates subgroups based upon the minerals' electronegative element, taking into account isomorphic substances. Thus, mineral groups such as carbonates are found together in the system. Beudant provides supporting evidence for the correctness of the system by showing the similarity in physical properties of minerals within with in these groups, thus anticipating Gmelin who a short time later showed the influence of the electronegative element on crystal form and physical properties. Beudant then continues to subdivide the system into various series by his own analogies.

Beudant strongly believed chemistry and the conditions during a minerals formation determined its crystallography. He writes that the diverse crystal forms of the same substance was not mere chance, but controlled by the chemical conditions of the environment when the crystal formed. He points out that the same crystal forms are seen at different localities where analogous geological conditions are found. Conversely, when neighboring minerals and rocks were different, a different crystal form would also occur.

In the use of chemical formulae, Beudant accepted Berzelius idea of using symbols to describe elements within formulae of the mineral species, however, in the Traité he modified the symbols to be based upon the French names of the elements rather than the Latin proposed by Berzelius. Thus he wrote E (Étain), M (Mercure), O (Or), Ox (Oxigène), etc. Berzelius took exception to this display of French pride, and pointed out that if each nation were to do the same modification, all advantage to the precise communication among chemists would be lost. In the second edition of the Traité, Beudant changed his symbols so as to conform with the Latinized names of Berzelius.

Very scarce. Scarce. This much expanded and improved edition reflects the tremendous strides mineralogy and chemistry made during the first part of the nineteenth century. Adopted by the Royal Council of Public instruction for the teaching in the royal colleges, this was the leading textbook in mineralogical science in France for many years. Volume one gives crystallography, properties, chemistry, classification, occurences, economic mineralogy. Volume two is a descriptive mineralogy. Large folding tables showing the overall classification of certain mineral groups are bound into the second volume.

Carl Friedrich Alexander Hartmann. (Born: Zorge near Walckenriedt, Harz, Germany, 8 January 1796; Died: Leipzig, Germany, 3 August 1863) German mineralogist, mining expert & metallurgist. Hartmann was the son of a foundry official in the Oberharz, a prolific mining/mineral district in Germany. From these roots, he developed an early interest in mining and metallurgy, and through family connections secured a position as a student at the mining school in Clausthal, Austria. Although his studies were interrupted from 1813 to 1816 by a stretch in the German army fighting Napoleon, he resumed his education afterward, becoming an assistant to Christian Samuel Weiss at the University of Berlin. In 1821, while still a student, Hartmann entered into a marriage that he could not financially support; therefore, he was obligated to leave the University and accept a bookkeeping position in Brunswick to provide for his family. His discretion and conscientiousness often meant being entrusted with important assignments. However, all spare time away from work or family was devoted to private study in the areas of geology, mining and mineralogy. His publications and translations in these fields brought him recognition and opportunities to travel throughout Europe. They also brought an appointment as commissioner of mines for Brunswick in 1825. Hartmann held membership in many scientific and technical societies, including Societät für die Gesamte Mineralogie of Jena and the Society for Mineralogy in St. Petersburg.

Very scarce. This heavily illustrated mineralogy text, a standard work and very popular in its day, was apparently first printed in 1840. It was subsequently reissued in France with new title pages proclaiming new editions for the next 46 years, and it had translations into Italian, German, and Polish. Apparently, only the first issues of the mineralogy were printed as separate volumes, usually without years. There after, the mineralogical text was combined with Beudant's Géologie (1st ed., Paris, 1840-1), creating a richly illustrated volume of mineralogy and geology, which changed little in its content during its long history of publication.

The introductory part of the volume is sectioned into five areas: (1) differences between organic and mineral bodies, providing definition and purpose of mineralogy and geology, (2) optical and physical properties of minerals, (3) chemical compostion of minerals, and (4-5) the classification of minerals. A table of mineral species and a descriptive mineralogy follow. The book concludes with an index. Within the volume main topics include a survey of crystals and crystallography, odd crystallizations, ideas on the internal crystalline structure, optical and physical properties, the chemical composition of minerals, mineral classification, and general observations. Illustrations show the goniometers of Wollaston and Babinet, a multitude of various crystal forms and combinations, double refraction, and minerals specimens.

The geological volume that is usually found bound with the mineralogy describes current phenomena (i.e., earthquakes, volcanic phenomena, outside agent influence), the application to the old phenomena (central heat - deposits attributable to sediments - to uprisings - volcanic action - erosion of waters), composition of the terrestrial crust, the phenomenon of crystallization, a survey of the geological composition of France, discussion on the geologic age of disasters, and the geological state of Europe.

Very scarce. Edited and published under the auspices of the Gesellschaft zur Verbreitung guter und wohlfeiler Bücher, this appears to be a combination of Beudant's mineralogy and geology, together with works on animals and plants by H. Milne-Edwards and A. de Jussieu. The work by Beudant was translated by Ludwig Carl, while the others were from G. Kißling.
