ANKER, Matthias Joseph.

(1772 – 1843)

(Born: Graz, Austria, 1 May 1772; Died: Graz, Austria, 3 April 1843) Austrian mineralogist.

Anker was educated in music, natural science and medicine. He became a surgeon in Stainz, and was in 1807 appointed district surgeon in Graz, Austria, 1807. There he became associated in 1811 with Freidrich Mohs of the Johanneum. Subsequently, Anker was appointed professor of mineralogy and custodian of the mineral cabinet at Johanneum. The mineral "Ankerite" was named in his honor by W. Haidinger in 1825.

Very scarce. The text begins with an historical perspective of mineralogical studies in the Steyermark. Listed then are the various mineral species found in the region arranged in a classification scheme, together with their physical properties and locality information.
