His doctorial dissertation was on the chemistry and crystallography of minerals from Australia. Anderson was appointed director of the Australian Museum, 14 February 1921, and switched his field of research to vertabrate palaeontology, in which made notable contributions - particularly the reclassification of Meiolania (the extinct horned turtle). He held membership in many Australian scientific societies. It is recorded that Anderson had a whimiscal sense of humor and simple tastes, and "when measuring crystals on the goniometer, an intricate piece of apparatus, his favorite song was `There was a wee cooper who lived in Fife,/Nicketty, nacketty, noo, noo, noo.'{"}.
