Very rare. Basing his study on published lapidaries but not manuscripts, this is a pioneering study in the history of precious stones as they were used in early medicine. It is an enlarged version of the author's doctoral dissertation on the same topic. The text describes how these minerals were used by people in India, China, the Middle East from prehistoric times through the Middle Ages. In addition, a systematic description of each gemstones properties is given with citations to the literature and to the diseases that the individual stones would treat.
