BECKER, August.
(1879 - 1953)

(Born: Osterburken, Baden, Germany, 19 February 1879; Died: Heidelberg, Germany, 16 January 1953) German physicist & crystallographer.

In 1901, Becker received his Ph.D. from Heidelberg, where he had studied since 1897. From 1901 to 1907, he was an assistant at the Physical Institute in Kiel. But in 1907, he returned to Heidelberg, becoming professor extraordinary of theoretical physics. In 1935, Becker was appointed professor of physics and director of the Philipp Lenard Institute at the University of Heidelberg.

Scarce. An important book in crystal optics outlining the theories of all components of the study, together with numerous practical examples taken from the mineral kingdom. The text covers crystals, light, refraction and dispersion, polarization, reflection, and double refraction. The prinicples of Huygens concerning light within a transparent body and Frensel's theories are reviewed.
