Robert Pöhlmann

Christian Robert Paul Pöhlmann was born in Wurzbach, Germany on April 29, 1858, the eldest son of Karl Pöhlmann, owner of a slate quarry. He graduated from Realschule in Saalfeld in Thüringia in 1879, and then dedicated himself to the study of mathematics and the natural sciences at the University of Leipzig under Professors Credner, Hankel, Hofmann, Leuckart, Masius, Mayer, Schenk, Weddige, G. Wiedemann, Wund, and Zirkel—concentrating in 1883 on the study of mineralogy and petrography. Pohlmann became so adept in these subjects that after the conclusion of his studies he was kept on as an assistant in the mineralogical-petrographic laboratory of Professor Zirkel at the mineralogical institute in Leipzig, in which position he remained for five years.

In September 1889 Pöhlmann signed a contract with the Chilean government to teach school there for six years. He began in Santiago as a teacher at the Liceo Amunategui in April 1890, but remained only until May 1891. On 1 June 1891 he took the position of Mineralogist and Petrographer to the the Ministry of Public Works in Santiago, and beginning in November 1894 he was also placed in charge of the mineralogical department of the national museum; in that capacity he made numerous collecting trip to enlarge the museum's holdings and also to provide specimens for several foreign prospective customers. From 1884 to 1900 he published 24 papers on his studies, including "The gold ores of Juanaca" (1891) and "The pseudomorphs of Minas Gerais" (1895). He died suddenly on December 12, 1901.
