David B. Grigsby

David B. Grigsby was born in San Bernardino County, California on March 26, 1920. He graduated from the University of California where he studied mineralogy, and built an outstanding single-crystal collection. In April of 1948, together with his friend Scott Williams, he founded "Minerals Unlimited" at 2006 Durant Avenue in Berkeley (13-year-old Si Frazier, later a well-known mineral dealer in his own right, was their first part-time employee). He was a member of the Gem & Mineral Society of Castro Valley in the early 1950s, and served as a judge at their annual shows (held in the library of the Hayward Union High School). As early as 1950 he was giving guest lectures about minerals to high school students. At that time he was living in San Lorenzo. He also enjoyed growing cacti and succulents, and gave lectures to hobby groups on grafting cacti.

Grigsby and Williams operated Minerals Unlimited for six years before selling their interest in it to Ralph Merrill in March of 1954. Grigsby then joined the staff of Ultra-Violet Products. He died April 15, 1994 in Vista, California.
