Carl A. Francis
(1949-    )

Carl Arthur Francis was born in Stafford Springs, Connecticut on October 21, 1949, the son of Paul and D. Jean Francis, a machinist and home maker, respectively. He grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts and began collecting in 1957 when was first introduced to minerals by Harriett Schoppee, a local collector, who shared her hobby by making and giving away egg box collections of common minerals.

He received his A.B. in Geology at Amherst College in 1971 (cum laude), his M.S. in Geology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in 1975, and went on to earn his PhD in Geology there in 1980. He was hired as Assistant Curator at the Harvard Mineralogical Museum while still in school in 1977, was made Associate Curator in 1981 and Curator in 2008. He has been involved with the Harvard Extension School's Master's degree in Museum Studies program since its inception in 1989, and currently teachs the "Collections and Curation" course and oversees internships. He regularly reviews manuscripts for various journals, and lectures frequently to mineral clubs and civic groups. His personal bibliography includes approximately 75 articles and reviews on mineralogical topics.

Carl was presented with the prestigious Carnegie Mineralogical Award in 1992 for his contributions to mineralogy. He is a Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America, and a Member of the Mineralogical Association of Canada, the Friends of Mineralogy, the New England Museums Association and the Society of Mineral Museum Professionals (serving terms as Vice President), and was elected to Phi Kappa Phi in 1975. He has served as Chairman of the International Mineralogical Association's Commission on Museums, as an Associate Editor of Canadian Mineralogist and as a Consulting Editor for Rocks & Minerals. He is also a Life Member and past President of the Braintree (Massachusetts) Historical Society, and is a Deacon and Trustee of the First Congregational Church of Braintree.
