Victor Vescovi

Victor C. Vescovi was born in Pesaro, Italy on October 9, 1906, and trained as a chemist. He and his Argentina-born wife, Aurelia Luisa Elena Vescovi (nee Lungaresi, born August 7, 1913) immigrated to the US in 1955. In the 1960's he had a small side-business selling minerals under the name of Victor C. Vescovi Fine Minerals and Vescovi's Minerals. He dealt primarily in rare and sometimes spectacular borates that he self-collected from the Pacific Coast Borax mine (and elsewhere in the Boron, California area), as well as specimens from worldwide localities. He was sufficiently well-organized and well-stocked to issue catalogs periodically.

Vescovi held a senior position in the U.S. Borax chemical laboratory in Boron, where he met the young Rock Currier (q.v.), who would house-sit for him when he went on vacation. Vescovi was from a wealthy Italian family and claimed that when he was young, he used to drive a Ferrari; but he was not inclined to spend much when he had to purchase mineral specimens. He had also developed an all-purpose plant food that he was trying to promote commercially.

Although he may well have been selling minerals in the 1950's, Vescovi first advertised in Rocks & Minerals in March-April 1960, giving his address as 12167 James Avenue in Boron, California (labels give only a P.O. box in Boron). The ad lists Victor's wife, Aurelia (who was also a music teacher) as the "proprietor," and Victor himself as "consultant, chemist and mineralogist." Their July-August 1964 ad shows them at a new address, in Lancaster, California, (north of Los Angeles, about 50 miles from Boron): 418 West Avenue J-10. Then in March 1966, they announced "Expanded! New Shop!" at 44823 North Beech Avenue. The shop was not to last long, though. Their last ad, in September 1968, shows them back at 418 West Avenue J-10. Victor died five months later, on February 28, 1969. Aurelia lived on for another 35 years, finally passing away on December 2, 2004, at the age of 90.
