Stan  Lesnick

Stanley Lesnick was born in New York on December 27, 1925, the son of David Lesnick, a clothing cutter in the garment industry. He earned his B.S. degree from Brooklyn College in January 1949, and in August of that same year was awarded his M.A. in Elementary School Administration. He worked as a high school Health and Physical Education Teacher for 12 years, and as a junior high school Vice Principal in George Gershwin Jr. High School in Brooklyn for 19 years. In 1952 he married Nancy Elizabeth ("Beth") Powell (born October 1929), a 1949 drama school graduate from Cincinnati, Ohio, who was working as a fashion model and actress.

While visiting with Beth's parents in North Vernon, Indiana, Stan (who'd had a mild interest in minerals) and Beth collected some outstanding butterscotch calcite crystals in the nearby Berry Materials quarry, and thus began their mutual interest in mineral collecting. They joined the Nassau Mineral Club in 1960, where Stan served as President for two years. They soon became part-time minerals dealers, making their debut at the Nassau Mineral Club Show in 1962, and participating thereafter as dealers at many Eastern mineral shows in New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Washington DC, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, Connecticut and New Hampshire between 1962 and 1993, and also Tucson from 1975 to 2005. Their daughters Dana and Carolyn helped man the booth at shows; Carolyn met her future husband, Peter Ehret, at the Tucson Show in 1977, and Dana met her future husband (a micropaleontologist) at the Washington DC Show in 1978.

Stan and Beth, under the company name of "The Lesnicks," operated out of North Bellmore, New York from 1962-1980, when they moved to Tucson, Arizona. Following that move they used "Lesnicks West" labels printed in brown ink, and green-ink labels with a dioptase drawing (by Wendell Wilson). They carried a range of specimens but specialized in Tsumeb minerals and Swiss minerals, traveling regularly to Tsumeb and Europe during the years 1975-1992. Although semi-retired now, they remain in the mineral business on a reduced level, with their grandson Nick, and they have a fine mineral collection built up over the years.

Stan Lesnick died on August 26, 2014.
