Friedrich von Distler

Friedrich Freiherr [Baron] von Distler was born in Vienna on December 24, 1878, the son of High Court Baron von Distler. He developed a passion for the natural sciences in his youth, and began collecting minerals while still at school. Mineralogy was more of a pasttime than a career, though; he went on to study law at the University of Vienna, then served as an attorney for the Ministry of Finance, dealing mostly with customs and excise matters.

Distler collected predominantly minerals from Lower Austria, and specialized in garnet from many different localities. He maintained a good relationship with the curator at the Mineralogy-Petrology Department of the Natural History Museum in Vienna and was also a correspondent of that institution. He purchased mineral specimens from various local and foreign dealers.

Distler ultimately bequeathed his mineral collection to the Natural History Museum in Vienna following his death on March 22, 1932. His mineral collection was housed in a beautiful cabinet inscribed "Dr. Friedrich (Baron von) Distler Bequest." However, contrary to the stipulations in his will, the collection was not kept separate as a unit, but rather was dispersed among the general systematic collection of the museum. The original cabinet, however, is still in use today.
