Thomas F. Lamb
(1825-1917)
Thomas Francis Lamb was born April 4, 1825 in Greene, Maine, the son of Merrick Lamb and Eunice Washburn. From the 1850's to the 1870's he worked first as a shoemaker in Poland, Maine, then as a shoe dealer (for L. Tyler & Co. in Portland in 1869), and finally listed himself as "retired from business" in 1880. He had begun collecting and mining minerals in 1875, and dealt in specimens on the side. In the mid-1880's, he was mining in association with several miners at Mount Apatite, Auburn, Maine. There is indication that he was associated with Loren Merrill at Mount Mica in the 1890's. Lamb exhibited his 2,000-specimen mineral collection at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. He acquired some of the famous Pleasant Mountain, Denmark, Maine amethyst from George Robley Howe (1860-1950). He died May 9, 1917, at the age of 92. Most of Lamb's mineral collection, rich in New England minerals including the amethyst, went to the Boston Museum of Science.
