Herbert M.W. Haven

Herbert Maurice West Haven was born in Boston, Massachusetts on December 16, 1885, the son of George H. and Minnie Skillings Haven. He lived most of his life in Portland, Maine, where he settled after marrying Florence E. Sawyer in 1915. Haven was a candy maker by trade, and proprietor of Haven's Candy Kitchen. Although no longer owned by the Haven family, Haven's Candies is still thriving as a respected maker of hand-made chocolates and other candies in Westbrook (suburban Portland), Maine.

Haven was a charter member of the Maine Mineralogical & Geological Society when it was founded in 1927 and was serving as its president when MMGS was featured in the June 1930 issue of Rocks & Minerals. He was an enthusiastic naturalist and a mineral collector at least by 1910, and possibly a micromounter; he was a member of the Metcalf Chapter of the Maine Microscopists. A former game warden, he was also a member of many other scientific societies in the fields of astronomy, botany, mammalogy, ornithology, herpetology and ichthyology.

He was an energetic silver pick collector and added a number of good local collections to his own, which gew to be quite extensive. He was also an enthusiastic field collector in his early years and purchased many specimens from the miners working at the mines he visited. In 1947 he was awarded an honorary Master of Science degree from Colby College in Waterville, Maine; his mineral collection was donated to that same institution. He died two years later.
