Tom Loomis was born in Blue Island, Illinois on January 15, 1960, and raised in Homewood, Illinois, a southern suburb of Chicago. He began collecting minerals at the age of 8, and ultimately decided to major in Geologiocal Engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, graduating in 1982. He has since been employed by the American Metal Climax Corporation (AMAX), ARCO Petroleum, the American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO), various Canadian gold mining companies, and the Coeur Rochester Mines where he served as Chief Geologist and Engineer.
Tom started his mineral specimen business, Dakota Matrix Minerals (www.DakotaMatrix.com), now located in Rapid City, South Dakota, in 1996 and became a full-time mineral dealer in 2000. He is currently involved in researching the mineralogy of the Black Hills and is mining the old Tip Top phospate mine for specimens.
