Louis Stadtmüller

Louis (Ludwig) Stadtmueller (or Stadtmüller) of New Haven, Connecticut was born in Bavaria in 1821 and emigrated to America in the 1848. He worked as an assayer at the Bristol, Connecticut copper mine and may have noticed the fine chalcocite specimens found there. He was active as a mineral dealer from at least 1870 to the 1890's -- He lists his occupations as full-time "Mineral Dealer" on the 1870 and 1880 New Haven, Connecticut censuses. He was a student for a while at the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale in New Haven, but discontinued his studies and became a sort of unofficial research associate, while running his mineral business from his office there. Eventually he was awarded a degree from the school anyway.

In an advertisement in the Naturalists' Directory for 1881-1882 he states: "Having been in the mineral trade for more than ten years, my connections with Foreign and American collectors is such, that I am in constant receipt of specimens from all parts of the world." He then supplies as references none other than James D. Dana, George Jarvis Brush and Edward Salisbury Dana!! However, he is not listed in subsequent Directories. His son, Frank H. Stadtmueller (q.v.) was also a mineral collector.

U.S. Federal Census 1870, 1880.
