Robert  Metzger

Robert A. Metzger, the proprietor of Alpha Gems and Minerals, and a past President of the Danbury Mineralogical Society, was a charter subscriber to The Mineralogical Record in 1970. He lived for many years in Fairfield, Connecticut and worked as a teacher at David Wooster Junior High School in Stratford. Following retirement he moved to San Diego, California, where he now lives.

The origin of Alpha Gems and Minerals is as follows: In 1971 Ronald Bentley (q.v.) purchased the mineral business of Ray and Alvin Schortmann (q.v.). The Schortmanns' stock was trucked to Windsor, Connecticut and became Bentley's Minerals. Ron and his partner Jim Logan also got into jewelry making (Jim's interest) and opened The Gem Factory in the late 1970's; they ran the mineral business until 1980, when Ron sold out to Robert Metzger of Alpha Gems and Minerals in Fairfield, Connecticut; Ron and Jim then moved to Tucson where Ron obtained his real estate license. Bob Metzger purchased the business with a promise to Ron that when he eventually sold it himself the sale would be under the same conditions under which Ron had bought it from the Schortmann's, i.e. that it could be bought on time payments with no interest charged. In 1986 Metzger sold his business (under the same conditions) to Howard and Janet Van Iderstine of Shelton, Connecticut, who, in 1987, opened as Cardinal Minerals. They are still in business today.
