Bill Butkowski
(1942-    )

William Richard "Bill" Butkowski was born on Christmas Eve 1942 in Jersey City, New Jersey and gew up in Bayonne. One lucky day in 1962 he found a garnet crystal at Franklin, New Jersey, and was offered $100 for it by a local mineral dealer. He decided instead to keep the crystal and buy a book on minerals, and thus began his collection. He subsequently learned about the Prospect Park quarry and collected there for many years, becoming a part-time mineral dealer (company name: "The Mineral Cabinet") in 1966. Bill earned his B.S. in Biology from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1971, then worked in a laboratory for seven years and in pharmaceutical sales for 31 years, retiring in 2003 to become a full-time mineral dealer. He wrote an article with Breck Kent on the Millington quarry (Mineralogical Record, Sept-Oct 1000), where he still goes to collect. Bill maintains a personal collection, specializing in New Jersey zeolites and associated minerals, Franklin minerals, Indian zeolites, and aesthetic worldwide minerals including calcites, Laguna agates, Mexican, Michigan and English specimens. On the side, just for fun, he collects and sells seashells, raises orchids, is involved in landscaping with dwarf shrubs, and sings with a 1950's acappella group. He now lives in Providence, New Jersey in the Watchung Mountains and can be found at the shows in Tucson, Springfield and Franklin/Clifton.
