Royal C. Gould
Royal Curtis Gould, Jr. was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 24, 1916, the son of Mabel Constance Montgomery (1893-1936) and Royal Curtiss Gould, Sr. (1896-1963), an insurance agent, and grandson of Cora LaBelle Duffy and Ernest G. Gould, a musician with the Kansas City Symphony. The family moved to Clinton, Iowa, by 1920, Eldora, Iowa by 1930, and finally to National City, San Diego County, California, by 1932. There Ernest ran Gould's Cafe; he had formerly been with the J. C. Penny Company in Eldora. Mabel opened a health food store called "The Vita" in National City.
During the early 1940s Royal (Jr.) worked for the W.F. Shemer Company in National City, before joining the U.S. Navy, and serving in the Aleutian Islands from at least 1943 to 1945. In the early 1950s he moved to China Lake, California to work as a meteorologist in the Atmospheric Studies Branch of the Naval Ordnance Test Station there, where he married ______, and together they had at least one child, daughter Patrice Elliott Gould (1951-2011).
In September 1952, Royal Gould, Jr. and Ralph Merrill, members of the China Lake Rockhounds, exhibited at the Desert Empire Fair in Ridgecrest, California. Twenty cases of minerals were shown at the fair; Ralph Merrill showed a collection of miniatures and Royal Gould "contributed a collection of varied rocks and gemstones." (Bakersfield Californian, 18 Sept 1952). Royal served as president of the NOTS [Naval Ordnance Test Station] Rockhounds in 1953 ("Royal C. Gould, meteorologist, geologist, and leader of the Pebble Pups"). He was also tour chairman and field trip chairman for the Maturango Museum in China Lake, California, in 1966, and was co-founder of the Indian Wells, California Mineral Society.
Royal Gould Jr. died at the age of 72 on October 12, 1988 in Kern County, California.
