Leonard Bedale

Leonard Russell "Len" Bedale, well-known California mineral collector, was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 2, 1924, the son of Myra L. Mortensen and Joseph Hillman Bedale, a public school teacher. He married Patricia _____ ca. 1950 (she later became a Notary Public).

Len served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946, was residing with his parents in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1952 (where he was working as manager of his father's Laundro-Lux laundromat), in San Diego in 1954 while serving in the US Naval Reserve, in Fullerton in 1958-1968, and in Hemet in the 1990s. For years during the late 1980s and 1990s he and his wife Patricia (1927-2000) had an apartment overlooking the harbor in Newport Beach, California.

In the early 1980s, after a chance encounter with Wayne and Dona Leicht's "Kristalle" mineral shop in Laguna Beach, California, and a subsequent visit to the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, Len began building a small collection of superb thumbnails. He continued to collect thumbnails, acquiring some really fine specimens (perhaps 40 to 50 pieces), attended the shows regularly and made some friends. In later years, when Pat fell ill, Len sold his collection to Jim Minette. The Minette collection was later dispersed by Dave Bunk.

Len was a mortgage broker and partner in the American Mortgage Company in Laguna Niguel, California. Pat died on February 8, 2000, and Len died a few months later in Hemet, Riverside County, California on October 25, 2000.
