Charles M. Noll

Charles M. Noll was born in Waterford, Wisconsin, on August 2, 1922, the son of Alice Marien Dobson and Alfred Milton Noll, a house painter and later bank cashier. His Noll ancestors emigrated from Germany in the early 1800s and were one of the founding families of Waterford, Wisconsin. They established the mercantile store, and Noll's Bank which today is known as the Associated Bank.

Charles graduated from Waterford High School and Marquette University with a degree in business administration (1947). He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and served in World War II. After the war he was a member of the Essman Schroeder American Legion Post 20 for 68 years. Charles was a hardworking businessman and very respected, which allowed him to serve on many community boards. He was a philanthropist to his community, especially the Waterford Library and many other community cornerstones. He was also an animal lover. having raised and shown chickens since he was five, and for many years he had prize-winning chickens. His special companions were his cat Molly and dog Benji.

Charles was an avid mineral collector, and was an early subscriber to the Mineralogical Record in the 1970s. He died at his home in Waterford, Wisconsin on December 31, 2014, at the age of 92, having bequeathed his extensive mineral collection to his alma mater, Marquette University in Wisconsin. The University had no Geology Department, though, so they transferred the Noll collection to the Seaman Mineralogical Museum in Michigan. The Museum sold off around 250 of the duplicates at the 2016 Tucson Show, providing labels like the one shown here.
