Chester R. Howard

Chester Raby Howard was born in Oklahoma on March 19, 1908, the son of Loula ("Lulu") Myrtle Johnson and Thomas Baugh Howard, a prospector and mortician. "Chester became a collector of agates at an early age while living in Oregon, and the hobby developed into a wide acquaintance with minerals" (Markman and Colburn, 1961).

In 1917 the family moved to Denver, Colorado, where Thomas and Lulu worked together establishing the Howard Mortuary Company. Chester attended East High School, and went on to study at the Colorado Agricultural College in Ft. Collins, graduating in 1931 with a degree in Forestry; in 1929-1932 he was living in his parents' home at 1901 Colfax Avenue, the address on his mineral labels. Then he lived for a while in Rapid City around 1935 (probably working for the U.S. Forest Service), but by 1940 he was back in Denver, living with his parents on High Street.

As of 1936 Howard was vice president of his parents' mortuary business, but later moved to 369 Ash Street (1948-1959) following his father's retirement (he died in 1949), working as the president of the Howard Life Insurance and Realty Company (his mother took over as president of the mortuary). He married Norma Maurine _____ (1916-2001) around that time.

Chester was a cofounder (in 1936) and president (1936-1948) of the Colorado Mineral Society (later the Mineralogical Society of Colorado), also president of the Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineral Societies (1947), and a founder and first secretary of the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies (1948); they held their first National Show in Denver that same year.

Chester R. Howard died in Lake County, Florida on December 8, 1990, and was buried in Denver.
