Karl Götzendorfer was born on June 12, 1939 and lived in Leonding-Alharting near Linz, Upper Austria. After leaving high school (gymnasium), he studied at the Montanuniversity of Leoben and graduated in 1966 with a degree in mining engineering. Until 1987, he worked for the United Austrian Iron and Steel Company (VÖEST-Alpine) in Linz. In 1992 he began working as an employee in the Earth Sciences Department of the Oberösterreichisches Landesmuseum (Upper Austrian Provincial Museum).

Dipl.-Ing. Götzendorfer was a legally recognized expert in mineralogy, gave lectures, organized numerous excursions and mineral shows and published in some journals. He has worked on restoring the historic mineral collection of the Wilhering monastery. His specialties were the Austrian mining industries, Alpine minerals, and the mineral deposits of Upper Austria. His travels took him to Brazil and Turkey, which he visited often. He not only collected minerals, but also mining lamps, Styrian aragonite boxes, postcards with mining motifs and geoscience books. After his death on August 18, 2010, his extensive collection of minerals was sold to the Upper Austrian Provincial Museum in Linz.
