Robert M. Eaton

Robert Michael Eaton was born in Clayton Township, Jefferson County, New York, on December 16, 1918, the son of Amelia D. and Walter P. Eaton (born in Massachusetts in 1888/9; son of Annie and Charles F. Eaton, born in Maine 1856/7 and worked there as a miner in 1880), the manager of an ice cream plant (1920-1930). By 1940 Robert was working as a newspaper photographer in Watertown, New York. He married Dorothy F. ______ in the 1940s, and in 1949 they lived at 509 Plymouth Avenue in Rochester, Robert still working as a photographer for Moser Studio. By 1954 they had moved to 54 Heberle Avenue, and as of 1960 Robert was still employed as a photographer. Together they had two children, Walter Eaton and Sue Ann Eaton (married Leonard Patti).

Robert Eaton is listed as being a member of the Rochester Academy of Science, Geology Department, and serving as Chairman of the Mineral Section in 1952/3 and 1959/60. He was a coauthor of Getting Acquainted with the Geological Story of the Rochester and Genesee Valley Areas (1968) (he wrote the chapter on fossils), and often assisted other authors in the preparation of photos for their published books and papers. He retired sometime in the 1990s.

Robert Eaton was a prolific field collector and a good mineralogist. He began advertising mineral specimens for sale in Rocks and Minerals in May-June 1954 and continued through January-February 2000. He also sold fossils early on; over the course of his business, though, he gradually shifted into micromount sales. He was a regular visitor to the annual Tucson Show. When he closed his mail order business (or when he died?) his remaining stock of specimens was sold to Tom Loomis (Dakota Matrix Minerals). Robert Eaton died in Rochester, New York on October 23, 2002.
