Leslie Sumner

The Valley Art Shoppe was actually a mineral shop in Chatsworth (Los Angeles area), California, at 21108 Devonshire Boulevard. They catered primarily to the mineral collector, but also sold lapidary materials, saws, findings, etc. They advertised in Rocks & Minerals (from January-February 1950 through November-December 1960) and in Desert Magazine (1957-1960). None of their ads in those magazines, or specimen labels, ever mentioned the names of the proprietors. However, their September-October 1960 ad in The Mineralogist states that they are a family business, and they have been serving the enthusiast for "over 20 years," i.e. since 1939 or so; it is signed "Les Sumner." In January 1961 he announced that the Valley Art Shoppe was changing its name to "Sumner's." Ads under that name continued until 1970.

In 1943 that was the address of Mr. & Mrs. I. N. Sumner; their son was Cpl. T. N. Leslie Sumner of the Engineering Regiment, serving overseas. The 1930 census for El Segundo, Los Angeles County, shows Ira N. Sumner, Assistant Superintendant of a water company, with wife Myra N. [Weinmann] Sumner and 7-year-old son Leslie S. Sumner, born in California in 1923.
