Earl  Melendy

Earl Roe Melendy was born in New York on June 10, 1919, the son of Beryl Amy Roe and David Earl Melendy, a farmer. The family had loved to rural Vermont within six months of his birth. By 1930, however, his family had relocated temporarily to the Bronx, New York, where his father worked as an electrician. He began studying and collecting minerals around 1933 (at the age of 14). It was in New York that Earl met and married Marie R. Marubio; they lived in River Edge, New Jersey for a few years before settling in South Londonderry, Vermont. Earl, along with his wife and daughter, were active members of the Northern Berkshire (Vermont) Mineral Club. For a while Earl operated a small-scale mineral business in South Londonderry called "Melendy's Minerals" and the "Melendy Mineral Museum." He had a son, Earl R. Melendy, Jr., and a daughter, Barbara. Earl Melendy died October 31, 1993 in South Londonderry, at the age of 74.
