Wendell O.  Stewart

Wendell Osgood Stewart was born in Ventino, Los Angeles County, California on January 17 (or 3), 1903, the son of Jesse Osgood and Charles W. Stewart, a real estate broker. By 1920 his family had moved to Pasadena, where his father opened his own real estate office in 1921. Wendell worked as a farm laborer for a while, beginning when he was 17, saving money for college. He ultimately earned an A.B. Degree in Economics from the University of California, Southern Campus, in 1926. After graduation he lived with his parents in Arcadia and worked as a real estate salesman in his father's Pasadena office. By 1942 he had moved to his own place in nearby Monrovia, he and his father having joined in the partnership of Stewart & Stewart ("real estate, loans, insurance, notary") in Monrovia in 1937. In 194X he married Laura C. Wargny, and together they had four children: Ronald (1943), Leland (1946; he was killed in Viet Nam in 1968), Laurette Marie (1954), and Annette.

Stewart made pioneering collecting trips to Mexico in 1937 and 1938, with his collecting partner, Earl Calvert, and wrote numerous articles for The Mineralogist and Rocks & Minerals. He was a charter member of the Mineralogical Society of Southern California and served as president. In 1943 he started a gold collection which became substantial in size over the years, but the quality was only average; he donated it (along with some quartz specimens) to the Lyman Museum in Hilo, Hawaii around 1990. He was a regular exhibitor at the annual Monrovia Gem and Mineral Show for many years in the 1950s-1970s. His mineral hobby and his interest in orchids kept him busy and inspired trips to Hawaii.

Wendell Stewart died in Monrovia, California on March 30, 1994.
