Elias R. Beadle

Rev. Elias Root Beadle was born in Cooperstown, Otsego County, New York on October 13, 1812, the son of Susan Squires and Henry Beadle. Coming from a poor family, he began working in a store at the age of 13, but was soon working as an assistant to his uncle, Judge Foote. At the age of 17 he decided to study for the ministry; his gift for preaching impressed a passing stranger one day, Judge Allan Stewart, who decided to pay Beadle's way through Presbyterian seminary. He studied for two years in Albany, then took a position as a traveling lay preacher working out of Utica. In 1835 he was officially ordained, and thereafter served as pastor in Buffalo and Albion. In 1839, by them married (to Hannah Jones), he departed for three years of missionary work in Spain and the Middle East. Returning to the U.S., he spent six years as a pastor in New Orleans. In 1852 he moved to Hartford, Connecticut and remarried, to Martha Ruth Yale. In 1863 he traveled again to the Middle East, then resettled in Philadelphia in 1865. He remained there for the rest of his life, and died of heart failure on January 6, 1879.

Beadle spoke a number of Middle Eastern languages and had wide-ranging interests in the natural sciences, but his main fields of collecting were conchology (shells) and mineralogy; his collection was said to be "one of the most extensive and valuable private possessions of the kind in this country," and he made large and valuable donations of specimens to a number of different educational institutions. His mineral collection was inherited by his son, the Rev. Heber H. Beadle of Bridgeton, New Hampshire, who presented it to Yale University in 1916. It was a very large collection, weighing in total about 15 tons.
