Lewis W. Loomis

Loomis & Schnee, in Cuya[hoga] Falls, Ohio advertised in the April through October 1890 issues of The Exchanger's Monthly. They dealt primarily in "curiosities" such as seashells, fossils, coins, confederate money and Indian relics, but also carried mineral specimens including Alaskan garnets, selenite crystals, and Herkimer "diamonds" (quartz crystals).

Lewis William Loomis was born in Lennox, New York on January 11, 1836, the son of Emmeline Thomas and William T. Loomis. He married Jane Curtiss in Ontario, New York, in 1863, and served in the Civil War. They had three children: Lillian (1865), Byron (1868) and Irving (1871). Lewis and his Loomis relatives ran a hardware business in Cuyahoga Falls, so he was familiar with sales and marketing. In 1891 his store was described as follows: "Corner of Front and Portage streets, stoves, tin, sheet-iron and copper ware, crockery, glassware, notions, etc. with five and ten cent store attached; reliable and prosperous establishment." He died November 26, 1906.

Frederick Schnee (patriarch of the only Schnee family in Cuyahoga) was the younger and better educated of the two. He was born in Freeburg, Pennsylvania on April 30, 1848, the son of Hannah Young and John H. Schnee, a farmer and master tanner. In 1864 the Schnee family had moved to Springfield, Ohio where Frederick attended Akron High School and the Greensburg Seminary. He taught school thereafter, and in five years was appointed principal of the Richfield High School. He married Caroline Melvina Gilcrest in 1870, and together they had two sons: Robert (b. 1872), John Thomas (b. 1877/8). In 1885 he moved to Cuyahoga Falls where he was appointed Superintendant of the Cuyahoga Falls school system, and served in that capacity for 20 years; he died December 27, 1919. In 1963 the Frederick Schnee Elementary School was named in his honor.
