Robert F. Kaar
Robert Frederick "Bob" Kaar of Lafayette, California was born in Berkeley, California, on June 12, 1930, the son of Gottlieben "Gloria" Frances Schilling and Harold Wright Kaar, a public school teacher. He married Sandra Jo Smedley in 1960 in Carson City, Nevada; they had one child: Karen Marguerite Kaar.
Bob Kaar taught Geology and Paleontology at City College of San Francisco for 32 years, and served as Department Chair of Earth Sciences from the early 1970s until his retirement in 1995. Bob began his study of geology, mineralogy and paleontology at City College, and after graduating he transferred to U.C. Berkeley where he completed his Master's Degree.
Returning to City College to join the faculty, Bob taught geology and paleontology courses, and took students on extended field trips throughout California. He was an avid mineral collector, and made many contributions to the collections and displays in the Earth Sciences Department at City College.
Robert F. Kaar died on February 12, 2003,at the age of 72. Mineral dealer James Zigras purchased many specimens from his estate.
