Mary Lynn Michela
Mary Lynn Michela, long-time Circulation Manager of the Mineralogical Record, was born in Tucson, Arizona on March 16, 1943, the daughter of James and Mary Goebel. She attended Tucson High School and the University of Arizona where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. While attending college in 1961 she met John White, who was then a geology graduate student. They were married in 1963, and subsequently had three daughters: Wendy (1963), Kendahl (1965) and Leslie (1968).
After finishing his studies John hired on as a field geologist for the American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO) in Tucson, and the following year (1963) he was hired by the Smithsonian Institution as a museum technician/specialist in the Mineral Sciences Department, under his old mentor, curator Paul Desautels. Consequently John and Mary Lynn left Arizona and moved to the town of Bowie in suburban Maryland outside Washington, DC.
In 1970, while still employed at the Smithsonian, John founded the Mineralogical Record magazine. It soon became obvious that he needed help in managing the growing list of subscribers, and Mary Lynn began to pitch in as necessary. As of 1971 she has been officially listed on the masthead as Circulation Manager.
John and Mary Lynn separated in 1976, but remained on friendly terms, and she has continued as Circulation Manager. In 1980 the Mineralogical Record, now under the management of Wendell Wilson, moved its publishing offices to Mary Lynn's hometown of Tucson, where she was introduced by old high school friends to attorney Richard Michela; they were married in 1983.
Throughout the years Mary Lynn has been an important part of the Mineralogical Record's success, serving on the Board of Directors, becoming well known to thousands of subscribers, handling the sale of countless thousands of back issues and a substantial tonnage of books, serving as finance officer for the corporation, and taking care of the complex task of bookkeeping. She is very much a homebody and doesn't travel to shows, but people always have the chance to renew their acquaintance with her each year at the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show.
