William A. Sherrill
William Andrew "Bill" Sherrill, Jr. was born in Tennessee in November 25, 1909, the son of Ella England and William, Sr., an insurance agent. He grew up in Tennesse, Alabama, Virginia and North Carolina, obtaining sporadic schooling but eventually accumulating an education, including various college courses and home study. He served in the Navy (1927-1930), then worked as a maintenance engineer in Sacramento, and married Idaona Oakden in 1934; they had two children before divorcing. He later taught engineering in the State Reformatory.
Willliam attended the Border Patrol Academy in El Paso, graduating in 1942 and eventually rising to the high rank of Intelligence Officer. In 1948 he married Catherine Ann Coleman. In 1955 he transferred to the Immigration and Naturalization Office in San Francisco (as a Special Investigator), where he worked until retiting in 1962. In retirement he and his wife did extensive ocean cruising in their 55-foot ketch, spent a year living in Mexico, bummed around Europe for a year, drove the Pan-American highway, and generally indulged their wander-lust.
At some point in his life he became a serious mineral collector, probably finding many opportunities to collect and buy specimens during his wide-ranging travels. In 1970 he and his wife decided to open a rare mineral shop as a hobby business, and purchased the Old Sing Kee Store in the gold-rush town of Volcano, California (in the Mother Lode gold area). The historic store occupied a building originally built in 1854.
In 1974 they decided that operating the store was too labor-intensive for a hobby business, and sold it, moving then to a home they had built in Liesure World in Mesa, Arizona. Travel remained a strong interest, however, and they then made a 44,000-mile trip covering Iceland, Eastern Europe, the Greek Islands, many countries in Africa and South America before returning home. In his spare time he researched and published a 500+ page book on his family's genealogy, the third edition of which was published in 1983; he died in October 1984 in Sun City West, Arizona.
