Alex Kipfer

Alexander ("Alex") Kipfer was born in Germany in 1922 and moved with his family to Switzerland in 1928. He operated a restaurant on Uraniastrasse in Zurick. He began collecting Swiss micromounts in 1962, at a time when micromounting was virtually unknown in Europe. He was the author of several books on micromounting including Der Micromounter (1972) (reprinted in 1984), Mineralindex (1974) and Ein neues Hobby, Kleinmineralien: sammeln und präparieren ("A New Hobby, Microminerals: Collecting and Preparation") (1974). These works were, in large part, responsble for the spread of interest in micromounting to Europe in the decades since. He also published numerous articles on mineralogical subjects and kept a wide-ranging correspondence with other German-speaking collectors, including expatriate Germans in America such as Paul Seel and Kay Robertson. In 1983, pressed by poor health, he donated the bulk of his study collection to the Natural History Museum in Bern, Switzerland and sold his systematic collection through a Munich mineral dealer. He also gave specimen sets to various interested private collectors. He was inducted into the Micromounters Hall of Fame in 1989, and was a member of many Swiss and German collector societies. He died in 1998.
