Arthur E. Southworth

Arthur E. Southworth was born in Algonquin, Illinois on February 11, 1867, the son of Sarah L. Miller and Gardner S. Southworth, a printer and publisher. Arthur operated a short-lived mineral dealership ("A.E. Southworth & Co.") in Woodstock, Illinois when he was just 17-18 years old. His first known ad appears in the first issue of The Young Mineralogist and Antiquarian, published in Wheaton, Illinois in July 1884, and continued at least through May 1885. He offered various mineral species by the pound, quartz crystals from Hot Springs, Arkansas, and a collection of 20 "Western minerals," including amazonite and Pikes Peak topaz.

Southworth probably obtained his specimens from Lucien Stilwell in Deadwood (Dakota Territory) and the Rev. R.T. Cross in Denver. It appears that he may have sold his personal collection in December 1884. With some exageration. Theodore H. Wise (publisher of The Young Mineralogist) announced that "$200 Buys the Finest Collection ever on Sale! A.E. Southworth & Co. have placed in the hands of T.H. Wise, an extravagant collection, which includes many specimens which HAVE NO EQUAL." Specimens included a 10-inch agatized quartz crystal for $100, fluorite, microlite, rutilated rose quartz, chabazite, muscovite, labradorite, beryl, amazonite and monazite.

In 1893 Arthur Southworth married Ida Lillian McConnell in Chicago, where he worked as proprietor of his own printing business. Arthur and Ida had one son, Arthur Bodine Southworth (b. 1896), who eventually took over his father's business, which was relocated to Evanston, Illinois. By 1915 Arthur E. Southworth had retired to Wilmette, Illinois. He died January 7, 1937.
