George W. Lawrence

Dr. George W. Lawrence was the town physician for Rock Springs, Arkansas for 40 years, and built the first large and comprehensive collection of Arkansas quartz specimens. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1824. He lived in Baltimore in 1850, where he apparently began his practice. He married Mary Galliway in Hot Springs in 1858. His second wife, Clara, was 22 years his junior when they married around 1873; together they had three daughters: Idam, Sarah and Allie. He first exhibited his extensive collection of quartz crystals at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876, and had prepared it for the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, but died before it could be shipped there. Philadelphia mineral dealer A.E. Foote purchased the collection from Lawrence's family in 1894.
