Carlton M. Davis

Carlton M. "Carl" Davis was born in New York on July 28, 1920. He attended Yale for two years, until the outbreak of World War II, enlisting as a flight navigation instructor.

Carl developed an early love of minerals and began collecting at the age of 12. He was an active member of the Columbus, Ohio Rock, Mineral & Fossil Club, and was well-known as a speaker and exhibitor at various mineral meetings and shows, winning numerous awards with his fine collection, especially his thumbnail specimens. He attended the Cincinnati, Detroit and Tucson Shows regularly, as well as the Rochester Mineralogical Symposium. Carl was personable and well-liked by everyone; he was enthusiastic about sharing his love of minerals, and in the process he mentored other young collectors that he met, including William W. Pinch and Robert Lavinsky.
