FAUJAS DE SAINT-FOND, Barthélemi.

(1741 – 1819)

(Born: Montélimart, France, 17 May 1741; Died: Saint-Fond, France, 18 July 1819) French geologist.

Faujas was a friend of Buffon, through who's influence he obtained an appointment at the Museum of Paris and commissioner of mines. He extensively explored France, England, Germany, Italy, etc. In 1793, he was made professor of geology at the Jardin des Plantes.

Rare. While exploring the hilly region of Vivarais and Velay in east-central France, Faujas recognized ancient basalt flows and their associated mineralization; however, their were no active volcanoes in the area. After mineralogically comparing the rocks and minerals found in France with specimens collected near active volcanoes, Faujas presents his conclusions in the Recherches, in which he showed decisively the volcanic origin of basalt. Although the neptunists would continue to show contrary evidence, Faujas conclusions were so convincing that it helped crush the thought that basalt formed through sedimentary processes once and for all. The Recherches also gives excellent descriptions and illustrations of the extinct volcanoes in France which Zittel says "have scarcely been surpassed in later publications."

Very scarce. In his great folio work Recherches sur les Volcans Éteints (Paris, 1778) Faujas established once and for all the volcanic origin of basalt. In his Minéralogie des Volcans he describes and classifies a variety of basalt and associated minerals from different sources. Of the twenty chapters, the first fifteen contain Faujas' observations and ideas about basalt. In particular, he enumerates and relates the mineral species found in ancient basalt fields to those minerals found near Mt. Ætna and clearly a product of that volcanoes geological process. He subsequently draws the correct conclusion that they formed in similar fashion at both locations. This is reinforced at the end of the text with Faujas' description of specimens collected by Dolomieu from Mt. Ætna.

Very scarce. Describes a trip taken through Great Britain in 1784. "In 1784 Faujas journeyed through England to Scotland; a full account was published in 1797. He narrated entertaining details of his travels and described arts, industries, and customs, but his most important observations were geological. He realized the volcanic nature of the basalt of the Inner Hebrides and paid special attention to the spectacular columnar occurrence on the isle of Staffa, about which his curiosity had been aroused by Banks's account in Thomas Pennant's Second Tour of Scotland ... (1774)" (DSB). In volume II there is a description of Faujas' visit to Joseph Black (pp. 267-262). The attractive plates include Fingal's cave and the interior of the house of McNab, the owner of a number of fragments of Ossian's poems. James Mcpherson's so called `translation' of Ossian's `Fingal' had been published in 1763 and ecstatically received throughout Europe.

Very scarce. This is the first appearance of Faujas' last work, which contains a summation of his life-time study and research of paleontology, geology, mineralogy and vulcanology. Volume one is devoted almost exclusively to fossils and Faujas gives a summary of the known species of fossil fishes and the localities in which they occurred. The first part of volume two is concerned with minerals and it is beautifully illustrated with five engraved and colored plates of minerals. The second portion is devoted to Faujas' final thoughts on the nature and origin of volcanoes.
